Many say that God was not needed to create life, and that to believe in a supernatural intelligent being is unscientific. These statements depend on how one defines Science. Science is generally thought of as the Study of Nature, using the scientific method. What is the scientific method? The scientific method is a way to carefully study how Nature works. In general, it is composed of three steps:
1) Someone makes a hypothesis (educated guess), about how something works.
2) Scientists create experiments to test the hypothesis.
3) The results of the tests either confirm, refute, or suggest changes to make the hypothesis better fit the data.
Steps two and three are repeated, until the scientists get a good understanding of how that something works.

3) The results of the tests either confirm, refute, or suggest changes to make the hypothesis better fit the data.
Steps two and three are repeated, until the scientists get a good understanding of how that something works.
Science is therefore the careful study of nature, using experiments, to see how Nature works. To restrict science to only be ‘The study of natural causes’ is to ‘politically’ impose a religion (specifically atheism) onto science. To remove politics from Science, the first definition above should be used. Therefore, to be considered scientific, a supernatural intelligent creator for life must be experimentally verified.
Problem: We can not put God, or any other supernatural being, into a test tube. Yet, how can we show that a supernatural intelligent being is needed to create life? |
Observation: First, life is composed of living cells. These cells are very complex. What is complexity? Complexity has to do with the number of interactions. Simpler things have fewer interactions. For example, a stick is simple, it has few interactions. In contrast, more complex things have more interactions. For example, interpersonal relationships are complex, because there are many people, emotions, personality types, & motivations all interacting together. Likewise, living cells are complex. They have cell walls, flowing energy, the emptying of waste, and DNA controlling it all through various intermediary proteins. And this is only for bacteria. We have not mentioned the additional complexity that comes with many-celled creatures such as a human body.
Proposed Hypothesis (stated as a question): Is intelligence needed to create complex systems? A system is a collection of parts that must work together. For example, a mouse trap is a system. If you take away any of its components, it won’t work, namely catch a mouse. A living cell is a system. If someone takes away one of its parts (e.g. the cell wall), the living cell will not work.
Proposed Experiment: Start with several different people, who have different levels of intelligence (this could be based on an IQ test). For example, take 1) a college professor, 2) an eighth grader, 3) a two year old, and 4) random forces (random forces have an IQ = 0). Have each one of the above subjects create several systems of varying complexity. For example, let each one design an eighth grade project popsicle stick bridge, a moon rocket, a living cell, etc. Repeat the above tests multiple times with different combinations of people, randomly applied forces, and systems. Look for a relationship between the level of intelligence, and the complexity of the system that is designed.
Observations: Intelligence is associated with the level of system complexity. Furthermore, it takes higher intelligence to create more complex systems. In contrast, randomly applied forces (IQ = 0) have never been seen to form a complex system. Instead, randomly applied forces wear down systems, and do not build up systems.
Conclusions: The probability that life randomly emerged out of millions of years is only a hypothesis. Rather, the experimental
data shows that it takes an intelligent being to create a system. Since living cells are the most complex systems known to humans, it
will take the smartest brains to create living cells. Furthermore, based on the experimental evidence that we have, a purely natural, dead thing has never made itself alive. We can therefore infer, “It took an intelligent being that is greater than nature (i.e. supernatural) to create the first living cell.” Until someone can experimentally show that non-intelligence can create a system, we must conclude that God was needed to create life. To believe in God is therefore scientifically supported.
Question: Can Science tell us which religion’s god is the true God?
Historical Evidence: Usually we think of history as someone conquering the late someone else. History is simply the recorded actions of people. Because experiments are the recorded actions that scientists took to study nature, science is, therefore, a special subset of history. Although experiments can not tell us which God created life, nevertheless, we can look to the broader area of human history for clues.
Most religions are based on some book. However, most of those books only give philosophical statements. There are a few religious books, which give historical statements that can be checked. One religious book has such historically accurate statements, that the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. uses it for some of its archaeological research. The Smithsonian Institute does not agree with all of the Bible’s statements. Yet, for the statements that they can check, they have found that the Bible is more accurate than most other ancient records, and indeed uses the Bible for its research. This is a good place to start. If the Bible is telling us the truth with its historical statements, then we can better believe it for its religious statements.

Repentance: Among its religious statements, the Bible proclaims that everyone has offended God in one way or another (for all have sinned and come short of the glory of God). Because of our offenses, a penalty must be paid, a death must be made (for the wages of sin is death, it is the blood that makes an atonement for the soul). The Bible proclaims several more things. First: God was in Christ reconciling the world unto himself. Second: Christ died for our sins, and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day. Third: The blood of Jesus Christ cleans us from all sin. Fourth: Repent (think differently about your sins) ye, and be baptized (identify with) every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the pardoning of your sins. Fifth: As many as received Jesus to them gave God power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name. www.seedshakers.com |
